TIPS

On this page you're able to find a couple of tips that I think are handy to know if you're a Falcon flyer :

Create a separate partition for Falcon 4

To speed up your fragmentation jobs and minimize the loss of data when a partition crashes I would advise you to create a couple of different partitions on your system. I have created about 12 (I know it's much, but handy) different partitions on my system. A couple of them are listed below :

If you're planning to partition you're hard disk you should keep in mind that once you set the size of a partition it isn't easy to change it later on without the risk of data loss.

How set partitions and sizes :

  1. You have :
                one hard disk or
a new system without a operating system or
you plan to format your disc and reinstall :
    1. After reading and accepting the licence agreement you should see your current disk and partition information
      Screenshot's are available here
    2. Delete all the partitions that are visible and confirm
WARNING : Deleting partitions will also delete the data on the partition
    3. Create a new partition that you want to install Windows on, all others will be added and configured later.
    4. Choose the size of this partition (DO NOT USE THE FULL SIZE OF THIS DISC)
    5. Choose the file system that you want to format this partition :
Windows XP supports NTFS, format the partition with it. If you do not, many folder and file security features will be unavailable.
If you are dual booting your system, a previous OS will not be able to read the local information. This is a fact with Windows 9x and ME. If you have a requirement to view this partition from another OS installed on the system, do not format it as NTFS.
Also, the boot partition must be formatted with FAT32 if you wish to dual boot. I have found no problems accessing a NTFS partition mapped as a network drive from an older OS.
    6. Continue you're Windows installation (according to the Windows installation manual)
    7. After a successful installation of Windows you can add the other partitions. The description of how to create partitions is well explained in the Microsoft support knowledgebase so please click the links below
      • Windows 9x and Windows ME users follow the fdisk instructions : Q 255867
      • Windows XP users follow the disk management instructions : Q 309000
  2. You have :
2 Hard disks, one with your operating system and one you would like to partition
    1. If you don't want to loose any data : copy all the data from your second hard disk to the first hard disk
    2. Delete all the partitions that are currently available on the second harddisk
      • Windows 9x and Windows ME users follow the fdisk instructions : Q 255867
      • Windows XP users follow the disk management instructions : Q 309000
    3. Create new partitions
  3. You have :
A installed system and want to resize your current partitions
    1. This is possible with the use of applications that resize partitions, I've done it a couple of times and it worked, but I prefer step 1 or 2
    2. One application to use is : PowerQuest Partition Magic
